Women in Black is an international peace network.
Women in Black is not an organizaton but a movement to turn despair into positive action.

Our goal is to call attention to the futility of the cycle of oppression, retaliation, and escalation that plagues our world.  We advocate for the right of all humans to live safely on this planet.  We strongly encourage our community to become better informed about world issues and to actively advocate for non-violent conflict resolution, making war an unthinkable option in the 21st century.

Guidelines
:
Participants are asked to join the vigils in a way that respects the wishes of it's organizers.

We "stand" for peace.  We aim to influence public opinion so as to make war or any other form of violence unthinkable.

We wear black as a symbol of mourning.

We are silent as a powerful symbol that we bear witness to the horrors happening worldwide.

We are disciplined and dignified as a symbol of solemnity appropriate to mourning.

Locations
:
"Stands" are held on two dates per month at two different locations.

Decenber 1, 2008 & January 5, 2009
12:15 PM at:
Redding Civic Center
777 Cypress Avenue * Redding
North Side of Fountain (Meet in Parking Lot)

November 17, 2008 and January 19, 2009 at 5:30-6:00 PM at:
Northeast Corner of Dana Drive & Churn Creek Road
Redding

Note:  No stand on the third Monday in December.

If anyone wishes to join a "stand", please honor the requests of the organizers when you participate.  All participants are requested to wear black, to remain silent during a "stand."  Anyone unable to physically stand for 30 minutes is invited to bring a chair and sit but only to do so if it is necessary for their participation.

The organizers will officially start and end each "stand."  Participants are encouraged to use the "stand" of silence to focus their thoughts on ways to constructively build community and enhance understanding between all people.

For more information, please call 243-8862. If you'd like to be placed on the email blast list to be notified of upcoming "stand" events, please go to the "Contact Us" portion of this website and email your name and email address to the address listed.
